Leading Indian industrialist Gautam Adani has signed a significant agreement with Bhutan’s state-owned Druk Green Power Corporation Limited for a 570 MW project.

Adani Power, the flagship company of Gautam Adani, has entered into a landmark partnership with Bhutan’s state enterprise, Druk Green Power Corporation Limited (DGPC). Both sides formalized a shareholder agreement for the development of the 570-megawatt Wangchhu Hydroelectric Project in Bhutan. Alongside this, an initial consensus was also reached on the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), marking a crucial step toward advancing the project, which is estimated to require an investment of around ₹6,000 crore.
The project also saw the signing of a concession agreement with the Royal Government of Bhutan. All these agreements were finalized in the presence of Bhutan’s Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay and Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani. This partnership paves the way for Adani Power and DGPC to implement the Wangchhu Hydroelectric Project under the BOOT (Build, Own, Operate, Transfer) model, which is designed to ensure long-term development and energy security.
A massive investment of nearly ₹60 billion will be directed into setting up the renewable energy plant and its associated infrastructure. The detailed project report has already been completed, and construction is expected to begin in the first half of 2026. The project carries a target timeline of five years for completion. Commenting on this milestone, Adani Power’s CEO S. B. Khyalia stated, “Bhutan is a global leader in sustainable development. We are excited to be part of this renewable energy initiative that will help in harnessing the country’s natural resources. The Wangchhu project will not only meet Bhutan’s electricity requirements during winters, when hydropower generation dips, but will also enable power exports to India during summers.”
Echoing this sentiment, DGPC’s Managing Director Dasho Chewang Rinzin remarked, “Bhutan and India have been collaborating in the field of hydropower since the 1960s, and this partnership has consistently delivered benefits to both nations. Bhutan aims to develop an additional 15,000 MW of hydropower capacity along with 5,000 MW of solar capacity by 2040. With the technical expertise and financial strength of the Adani Group, this project will be completed at an accelerated pace and will serve as a benchmark for future initiatives.”
This ambitious venture is part of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in May 2025 between Adani Group and DGPC, which outlined plans to develop 5,000 MW of hydropower capacity in Bhutan. Both entities have already started discussions for subsequent projects, signaling deeper collaboration in the renewable energy sector and reinforcing the strategic energy partnership between India and Bhutan.
