ITR Filing Deadline Today

For the assessment year 2025-26, the deadline to submit income tax returns is September 15, 2025. A huge number of taxpayers have already filed their returns. According to the Income Tax Department, over six crore returns have been submitted so far. The department continues to provide 24×7 support and urges taxpayers to avoid last-minute rush. Speculation has been circulating about an extension, but no official word has come from the Finance Ministry. Let us find answers to the most common questions, from ITR Filing Last Date to refunds.

When Was the ITR Due Date Extended?

The Income Tax Department initially set the filing deadline for assessment year 2025-26 (FY 2024-25) as July 31, 2025. Later, it extended the date to September 15, 2025. In May, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) explained that the extension was due to “significant changes in notified ITR forms, system preparation, and rollout requirements for users.”

Will the Deadline Be Extended Again?

Avinash Polepalli, Business Head at ClearTax, stated in media reports that no extension is expected this year. He explained that most taxpayers are required to comply by the due date, so the chances of further extension are very low. Since no official announcement has been made, taxpayers must file by September 15 to avoid penalties.

Essentials Before Filing ITR

First-time filers must register on the Income Tax e-filing portal, while existing users can directly log in. Gather all necessary documents such as Form 16, Form 26AS, AIS, PAN, Aadhaar (linked with PAN), investment proofs, bank statements, PPF details, capital gains P&L statements, interest certificates, and insurance premium receipts.

Choosing the right ITR form is critical. Include all income sources, even “income from other sources.” Recheck income details with Form 26AS and AIS to avoid mismatches. Ensure your bank account details are correct to prevent refund delays.

How to File ITR

Collect essential documents and download Form 26AS and AIS. Choose the appropriate ITR form. Enter personal income details, check deductions, and verify all data. Submit your return through the portal.

Income Tax Slabs (FY 2024-25)

As per Income Tax Department:

  • ₹0 – ₹2,50,000 → Nil
  • ₹2,50,001 – ₹5,00,000 → 5%
  • ₹5,00,001 – ₹10,00,000 → 20%
  • ₹10,00,001 and above → 30%

(Note: The announcement of zero tax for income up to ₹12 lakh applies from FY 2025-26, not for the current filing.)

Is ITR Filing Required with Zero Tax Liability?

Many taxpayers believe that no return is needed if liability is zero. But filing remains mandatory regardless of tax dues. Income Tax Returns are required for loan applications, visa approvals, and compliance purposes.

Selecting the Right ITR Form

  • ITR-1 (Sahaj): For individuals with income up to ₹50 lakh, including salary, pension, one house, and limited agriculture income.
  • ITR-2: For individuals not eligible for ITR-1 and without business or professional income.
  • ITR-3: For individuals and HUFs with business or professional income requiring detailed disclosures.
  • ITR-4: For resident individuals, HUFs, or firms (except LLPs) with income under presumptive taxation schemes and total income under ₹50 lakh.

Switching Between Old and New Tax Regimes

Salaried taxpayers can choose between old and new tax regimes while filing. The new regime allows fewer deductions but has simpler slabs. The old regime provides deductions under Chapter VIA, including NPS, LIC annuities, Agnipath contributions, health insurance, higher education loans, home loans, and electric vehicle loans. Donations to funds, scientific research, or political trusts also qualify under the old regime.

Exemption, Rebate, and Deduction – The Difference

Exemption means income up to a limit is not taxed. Rebate applies to specific income categories, reducing part of the taxable income. Deduction is a claim on investments or expenses that lowers taxable income, reducing overall liability.

Why E-Verification is Mandatory

After filing, taxpayers must verify their returns within 30 days. If not verified, the filing will be treated as invalid. Verification can be done using Aadhaar OTP, Electronic Verification Code (EVC), net banking, or by sending a signed ITR-V form.

When Will You Receive Refund?

Once verified, refunds are usually processed within 7 to 21 working days. On average, it may take 4-5 weeks for the refund to appear in the taxpayer’s account. The Income Tax Department issues refunds only after successful e-verification of the return.
