BRS expels MLC K Kavitha over ‘anti-party’ remarks

On September 1, responding to the Telangana government’s move to seek a CBI probe into the Kaleshwaram project, Kavitha alleged that her father KCR’s reputation was tainted because of senior BRS leaders and her cousins Harish Rao and Santosh Rao.

Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) on Tuesday suspended MLC K Kavitha, daughter of party chief and former Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao, accusing her of indulging in “anti-party activities.” The disciplinary action came a day after she held senior party leaders responsible for the federal probe into alleged irregularities in the Kaleshwaram lift irrigation project.

“The BRS leadership has taken serious note of MLC Kavitha’s recent behaviour and remarks. Her activities have caused immediate damage to the party’s image,” read a statement by BRS general secretaries Soma Bharat Kumar and T Ravinder Rao.

On September 1, reacting to the state government’s decision to allow a CBI investigation into the project, Kavitha claimed that her father’s image was tarnished due to the actions of her cousins, Harish Rao and Santosh Rao. She further alleged that they were the ones who managed key aspects of the project, amassed huge assets, and “blinded” KCR. Calling them the “anacondas of corruption,” she questioned whether the party’s survival even mattered when KCR himself was subjected to a CBI inquiry.

Following her suspension, BRS workers at Telangana Bhavan removed posters, banners, and photographs featuring Kavitha. In districts like Suryapet and Siddipet, party cadres went a step further by burning her portraits and shouting slogans against her.

In contrast, Kavitha’s supporters rallied outside her residence, denouncing the action as unfair. “This is injustice. The suspension is totally wrong, and we strongly oppose it,” Telangana Jagruthi youth vice president Ravi Rathod told ANI.

Reacting politically, Telangana Congress chief B Mahesh Kumar Goud called the development an “internal matter” of BRS but noted that the rift within the KCR family “seems to be over the distribution of ill-gotten wealth.” He also said corruption charges warranted a neutral CBI investigation.

BJP MP K Laxman demanded that Kavitha’s allegations against Harish Rao be examined, remarking that the feud within KCR’s family had exposed “the corrupt practices” of the party.
