China continues its provocations. A video of its Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Mao Ning, has surfaced. She claims India established Arunachal Pradesh illegally. She states Arunachal Pradesh is an ‘Illegal Setup’ by India. She also referred to Arunachal Pradesh as the Zangnan area.

Congress Questions the Government

Congress has now challenged the government on this issue. The party posted on social media saying: “China is not stopping its wicked activities. China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated: India settled Arunachal Pradesh illegally. Arunachal Pradesh is an Illegal Setup of India. Arunachal Pradesh is part of China’s Zangnan. China’s language is highly objectionable. This is an insult to India. The Modi government must register a strong objection to this. Such low-level rhetoric concerning India will not be tolerated.” Congress also shared a video of the Chinese spokesperson.

What is the Whole Issue?

The controversy over Arunachal Pradesh began when an Indian woman from the state was harassed. This harassment occurred at the Shanghai airport on November 25. China termed this action as being compliant with its laws and regulations. China also denied the allegations of harassing the woman.

Pema Wangzom Thongdok, an Indian citizen residing in Britain, was traveling from London to Japan on November 21. She claimed her three-hour layover turned very bad. Chinese immigration officials declared her passport invalid. This was solely because Arunachal Pradesh was listed as her place of birth.

China Denied Harassment

The Indian government sought an answer about the incident involving Thongdok. The Chinese Foreign Ministry dismissed the harassment claims. However, they referred to Arunachal Pradesh as the Zangnan area. China claimed its border inspection officials completed the process. They did this according to relevant laws and rules. They reiterated China’s claims. They stated that the Zangnan area is part of their territory. China had stated, “Zangnan is part of China. China has never recognized the so-called Arunachal Pradesh illegally established by India.”

India Registers Strong Protest

The Government of India took immediate action after Pema Wangzom Thongdok’s statement on social media. Sources indicate India protested to China on the day of the incident. This protest was lodged in both Beijing and Delhi.

India has clearly told China that Arunachal Pradesh is Indian territory without any doubt. Its residents have every right to hold and travel with an Indian passport. The Indian Consulate in Shanghai also raised the matter locally. They provided complete assistance to the stranded traveler.
