While Congress criticizes PM Modi and the BJP over Trump’s assertion of brokering peace, senior leader Manish Tewari highlights the historical role of backchannel diplomacy.

Congress has criticized PM Narendra Modi and the BJP-led government following President Donald Trump’s claim that he facilitated the India-Pakistan ceasefire after Operation Sindoor. However, senior Congress leader Manish Tewari took a more measured stance on Sunday, emphasizing a “nuanced” perspective.
According to Tewari, backchannel communications have been a feature of every India-Pakistan conflict. Speaking to ANI, the Chandigarh MP said, “The call that ended hostilities on May 10 at 5 pm (post-Operation Sindoor) was made that afternoon by Pakistan’s DGMO (Director General of Military Operations). Whether backchanneling played a role can only be confirmed by those directly involved.”

Tewari, a former Union minister in the UPA government under Manmohan Singh, was part of multi-party delegations chosen by the Modi government for diplomatic outreach after the Pahalagam terror attack and Operation Sindoor. Another Congress leader, Shashi Tharoor, has also occasionally expressed positions differing from the party line on diplomatic matters.
The Opposition, including Congress, has pressed PM Modi to clarify India’s stance, insisting that the country maintains sovereignty by not allowing third-party involvement in its relations with Pakistan.
“The answer is nuanced,” Tewari said regarding Trump’s claim. He referenced backchanneling dating back to Operation Brasstacks in 1987, adding, “In President Trump’s language, backchanneling is now considered frontchanneling. The US administration often disregards established diplomatic practices. While EAM Jaishankar and PM Modi were in contact with various US officials, the decisive call to end hostilities on May 10 came directly from Pakistan’s DGMO. Only the actual participants can fully explain the role of backchanneling.”
