Impact of Volcanic Ash

Ash clouds from Ethiopia have disrupted flight operations in India significantly. The Hayli Gubbi volcano erupted for the first time in recorded history. Its ash entered the Indian subcontinent from the western side. The clouds reached Delhi on Monday night before moving elsewhere.

Airline Cancellations

Major airlines like Air India and Akasa Air faced interruptions. They announced cancellations on Tuesday due to the ash plumes. This ash originated from the volcanic eruption in Ethiopia.

Air India Flight Updates

Air India has cancelled at least 11 flights since Monday. They are performing safety checks on planes that flew near ash. This is a precaution against the volcanic activity in Ethiopia. Media reports state the Hayli Gubbi volcano sent ash 14 km high.

Specific Routes Affected

Air India cancelled four domestic flights on Tuesday. These include AI 2822 and AI 2466. Routes like Mumbai-Hyderabad and Mumbai-Kolkata were also affected. On Monday, they cancelled seven international flights. These included routes from Newark, New York, Dubai, and Doha.

Akasa Air Response

Akasa Air confirmed cancellations for flights to the Middle East. Destinations like Jeddah, Kuwait, and Abu Dhabi face disruptions. Tracking data shows the ash covered parts of Pakistan and India. It crossed Yemen and Oman on Tuesday.

Weather and Forecast

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) tracked the ash clouds. They stated the clouds are drifting towards China. The ash should move away from India by Tuesday evening. Forecasts showed influence over Gujarat, Delhi-NCR, and Rajasthan.

Regulatory Warnings

The DGCA issued strict instructions to all airlines. They must avoid areas affected by volcanic ash. Airlines must adjust flight planning and fuel needs immediately.

IndiGo and SpiceJet Updates

IndiGo issued an advisory on Monday regarding the situation. They are tracking the ash with global aviation bodies. They stated, “We are fully prepared with all necessary precautions to ensure safe and reliable operations.” No IndiGo flights have reported damage yet.

Support for Passengers

IndiGo assured passengers of full support. They said, “Our 6E teams are available across all touchpoints to support you with any assistance you may need.” SpiceJet also warned that ash in the Arabian Peninsula could impact flights.

Safety Priorities

SpiceJet emphasized safety in their statement. They said, “As safety remains our top priority, our Flight Operations and Safety teams are closely coordinating with aviation authorities.” Passengers flying to Dubai should check their status online.
