Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the 47th ASEAN Summit virtually on Sunday. He stated that India and ASEAN collectively represent about 25% of the world’s population. PM Modi highlighted that the relationship between both sides rests on deep historical, cultural, and shared values.
ASEAN is a Core Pillar of India’s Policy
The Prime Minister mentioned that ASEAN is a core pillar of India’s ‘Act East Policy’. He stressed that cooperation between India and ASEAN is vital for regional stability, peace, and prosperity.
India and ASEAN Champion the Global South
PM Modi asserted that the India-ASEAN partnership is not just economic or strategic. It also symbolizes the voice and leadership of the ‘Global South’. He mentioned that India has consistently stood strong with its ASEAN friends during every crisis and disaster.
India Committed to Progress Together
PM Modi stated, “Even in this era of uncertainties, the India-ASEAN Comprehensive Strategic Partnership has seen continuous progress.” He added, “Our strong partnership is emerging as a powerful foundation for global stability and development. The theme for this year’s ASEAN Summit is Inclusivity and Sustainability. This theme is clearly visible in our shared efforts.” He continued, “Be it digital inclusion or ensuring food security and resilient supply chains amid existing global challenges. India fully supports these priorities and is committed to moving forward together in this direction.”
Malaysian PM Calls for Cooperation
Earlier, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim inaugurated the ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur. On Sunday, he stated that adaptability and cooperation are needed to face global protectionism and uncertainty.
The Malaysian Prime Minister said rising protectionism and changing supply chains remind us that resilience depends on adaptability. He noted, “In various sectors, we are witnessing increasing competition and growing uncertainty.” He explained, “These adverse circumstances test not only our economies but also our collective resolve to maintain faith in cooperation.” He expressed confidence that understanding and dialogue can prevail even in challenging situations.
