A deep depression formed over the southeast Bay of Bengal is intensifying into the severe cyclonic storm ‘Mantha’. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert for several states near the Bay of Bengal.

The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a strong warning. A deep depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal is moving west-northwestwards. The IMD predicts it will intensify into a cyclonic storm by Monday (October 27, 2025). This storm is likely to become a ‘severe cyclonic storm’ by Tuesday morning (October 28, 2025). This will occur over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal.
Army on High Alert in Southern States
Following this warning, the Indian Army is on high alert in several states. Focus areas include the Southern Peninsula, such as Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu. The severe cyclonic storm ‘Mantha’ is expected to hit the area by October 28. Odisha may also face the impact of potential Cyclone Mantha. This is in addition to the states in the Southern Peninsular India.
Winds May Hit 110 Kmph Speed
According to the IMD report, this deep depression will likely move in a northwest direction. It could cross the Andhra Pradesh coast near Kakinada. This landfall will happen between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam. It is expected on the evening or night of October 28 as a severe cyclonic storm. Upon landfall, wind speeds could range from 90-100 kmph. Speeds might even reach up to 110 kmph.
Another System Brewing in the Arabian Sea
Another low-pressure area currently exists in the Arabian Sea. It is moving at about 13 kmph in a south-west direction. As of Sunday morning, October 26, it was about 760 km west-southwest of Mumbai. It was also 790 km west of Goa and 970 km west-northwest of Mangalore. This area might continue moving southwest over the east-central Arabian Sea for the next 24 hours.
Red Alert for 3 Days in Andhra Pradesh
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) posted an update on ‘X’ on Sunday. Andhra Pradesh is on Red Alert for October 27, 28, and 29. Telangana, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh also have a Red Warning for the next three days. The IMD indicated a possibility of heavy to very heavy rain in parts of these states. This is because the deep depression may soon convert into Cyclone Mantha.
Andhra Pradesh Prepares for Cyclone Mantha
The Andhra Pradesh government has prepared an action plan. This plan addresses relief work and essential supplies. It aims to tackle the potential impact of Cyclone Mantha. The government has detailed pre-storm preparations to ensure readiness before the expected landfall.
Government Message to the Public
State Civil Supplies Minister N. Manohar provided details. The plan includes positioning of PDS goods stock. It also covers fuel storage management and paddy procurement. Furthermore, food supply at relief shelters and post-storm relief distribution are covered. Manohar released an official statement late on Saturday night. He said, “The Andhra Pradesh government has detailed pre-storm preparation measures for Cyclone Mantha. This ensures all preparations are complete before landfall.”
The IMD suggests rough sea conditions are likely in most Bay of Bengal parts. The system will soon turn into a severe cyclonic storm. Rough to high sea conditions will be seen in the southeast and east-central Bay of Bengal. This will commence from the evening of October 26.
