Historically Significant Visit Focuses on Economy and Security

India and Jordan have set a big goal. They want to double their two-way trade. This target is $5 billion over the next five years. They are also boosting key sector cooperation. Fertilizers, especially phosphates, are a major focus. The External Affairs Ministry (MEA) shared this information. They gave a special briefing on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Jordan visit.

MEA Secretary (South) Neena Malhotra shared the visit details. She called the trip historically significant. “It is the first full-fledged bilateral visit in 37 years,” she said. She also mentioned the timing. “This visit also coincides with the 75th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral relations between our two countries.”

Security Convergence and Economic Focus

Malhotra addressed the media regarding discussions. She said both sides agreed strongly on key security issues. “The Jordan side conveyed their support for India’s fight against terrorism,” she noted. She added they “condemned terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.” The Prime Minister “commended the leading efforts by His Majesty on de-radicalisation,” she further stated. He also praised him “as a voice of moderation in the Islamic world.”

Economic cooperation was a main point of the talks. Malhotra mentioned discussing “the significant cooperation between the countries in the field of fertilisers, especially phosphates.” She highlighted a key proposal. “Our Prime Minister also proposed doubling of bilateral trade to USD 5 billion in a span of five years.” Regarding global matters, she said, “On regional issues, the leaders reiterated the importance of peace and stability in the region.”

Agreements Finalized for Broader Cooperation

Several agreements were finalized to expand collaboration. The MEA South secretary confirmed this. “During the visit, several MOUs and agreements have been finalised,” she said. They cover fields like energy, digital technology, and water management. Culture and people-to-people connect are also included.

She stressed the strengthening of cultural ties. “The strong cultural relations between the two countries got a further push,” she said. This was achieved with the Cultural Exchange Program for 2025-29. Additionally, “both sides also finalised the Twinship Agreement between the site of Petra and Elora Caves of Maharashtra,” she explained. This agreement will promote social relations. It will also foster cooperation in tourism and culture. Digital cooperation was also a major point. Malhotra noted that “both countries also agreed on further collaboration in the field of sharing successful digital solutions.” This was achieved by “finalising a letter of intent in the same field.”
