Tata Advanced Systems, in collaboration with Spain’s Indra, has commissioned the Indian Navy’s first indigenous 3D Air Surveillance Radar ‘Lanza-N’. Installed on a warship, this radar tracks drones, fighter jets, and missiles. Tata’s Karnataka facility will manufacture and assemble more such radars.

Tata and Indra Deliver Breakthrough for Indian Navy
Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) has achieved a major milestone by commissioning the first 3D Air Surveillance Radar (3D-ASR) for the Indian Navy, developed jointly with Spanish defense company Indra. Named Lanza-N, the radar has been mounted on a naval warship, strengthening India’s journey toward defense self-reliance.
What is the Lanza-N Radar?
The Lanza-N is a naval version of Indra’s advanced Lanza 3D radar, considered among the world’s top long-range air defense and anti-missile systems. It can track both aerial and surface targets in 3D with remarkable accuracy. The radar has an impressive range of 254 nautical miles (about 470 km) and can detect drones, supersonic fighter jets, anti-radiation missiles, and naval platforms.

The system functions seamlessly even in harsh weather conditions and is highly effective against enemy aerial threats. For the first time, the Lanza-N radar has been deployed outside Spain. Indra has customized it to withstand the humidity and heat of the Indian Ocean region. The radar is fully integrated with the warship’s systems and has successfully passed rigorous sea trials, which included tests against multiple naval and aerial platforms.
Collaboration Between Tata and Indra
This achievement stems from a 2020 agreement between Tata Advanced Systems and Indra. The deal covers the delivery of 23 radars, with three being directly supplied by Indra and the remaining 20 assembled in India by Tata. To support this project, Tata established a radar assembly, integration, and testing facility in Karnataka, ensuring faster and more efficient delivery.
Sukaran Singh, CEO and MD of TASL, said, “Our collaboration with Indra symbolizes the strengthening of India’s radar manufacturing capability. We are building an ecosystem of advanced defense systems powered by local supply chains and technical expertise.”
Ana Buendía, Head of Indra’s Naval Business Unit, added, “This project goes beyond radar delivery. Together with Tata, we have set up a radar factory in Bengaluru, enabling local production and services.”

Importance for the Indian Navy
The Indian Navy plans to deploy the Lanza-N radar on frigates, destroyers, and aircraft carriers. The first commissioned radar is already operational on a warship, with more installations lined up in the near future. The system will significantly enhance the Navy’s surveillance capabilities, especially against hostile drones, jets, and missile attacks.
Indra’s Lanza-N is a modular, solid-state, pulsed tactical radar designed to track all types of aerial and surface threats. The project marks a major leap toward India’s defense self-reliance. With this initiative, Tata becomes the first Indian company to build and integrate next-generation naval surveillance radars. More than 50% localization will ensure strong support for the ‘Make in India’ initiative.
