Key Meeting Scheduled

Representatives from Ladakh are set to meet the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). Three delegates each from the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) will attend. The Ladakh MP will also be present at the talks on October 22.

Focus on Key Demands

The main agenda is the demand for statehood for the Union Territory of Ladakh. Discussions will also cover constitutional safeguards. The LAB confirms they seek protection under the Sixth Schedule. This move aims to protect the region’s land and culture.

Leaders Welcome Dialogue

A spokesperson shared an update from the Home Ministry. “We were informed by the Home Ministry that a meeting of the sub-committee is scheduled for October 22, and both LAB and KDA are invited to it. We welcome the decision of the government of India to invite us and look forward to the positive outcome of the dialogue,” he stated. This signals hope for a constructive resolution.

Recent Unrest and Protests

Widespread violent protests erupted in Leh on September 24. A shutdown was called by LAB leaders. They sought talks with the Centre on the demands for statehood and Sixth Schedule extension to Ladakh. The agitation turned violent.

Casualties and Detention

Four people were killed during the clashes. Many others suffered injuries between protesters and security personnel. Allegedly, over 50 people were taken into custody for rioting. This highlights the seriousness of the situation.

Activist Sonam Wangchuk Under NSA

Activist Sonam Wangchuk is a key face of the agitation. He was also detained under the National Security Act (NSA). The NSA empowers authorities to detain people.

This prevents them from acting in a manner “prejudicial to the defence of India”. The maximum detention period is a year. However, it can be revoked earlier.

Previous Attempts Failed

Government sources indicate earlier communication attempts failed. Talks were previously attempted on July 20. However, there was no response to this effort. The LAB and KDA continue to lead the fight for statehood and Sixth Schedule extension. They want these protections for the Union Territory.
