Is Your Certificate at Risk? What Maharashtra’s New Rule Means for You

Birth Certificates are essential for many government procedures in India. They are vital documents, needed for everything from school admissions to passports. People use them as official proof of their birth. However, millions of people in Maharashtra may soon see their birth certificates cancelled.
Why is Maharashtra Cancelling Birth Certificates?
The state government has ruled that birth certificates created solely on the basis of an Aadhaar card will no longer be considered valid. Aadhaar provides identity proof, but it is not valid proof of birth. The government discovered that many fraudulent birth certificates were created by exploiting this loophole. Therefore, millions of these documents are now being cancelled.
The Supreme Court is currently debating whether Aadhaar is valid for birth proof during the ongoing SIR process nationwide. Simultaneously, Maharashtra announced that the Aadhaar card would no longer be accepted as a birth certificate. Aadhaar only shows a person’s identity. It fails to confirm the person’s exact date and place of birth. This gap led to numerous instances of fake certificates.
Stopping Misuse and Fraud
These fake birth certificates were increasingly being used for illegal activities. They facilitated issues like false identity and incorrect age claims. To combat this rising threat, the Maharashtra government took a firm decision. It issued an order declaring that all Aadhaar-based birth certificates are immediately considered cancelled. Now, genuine documents are mandatory for every certificate. These include hospital records, school entry records, or municipal registers.
Are You Affected by This Decision?
Many citizens are concerned following the Maharashtra government’s decision to cancel birth certificates. They fear their own document might be cancelled. Note this: your certificate is likely to be cancelled if you obtained your birth certificate using only your Aadhaar card.
The government is actively rechecking these certificates. All such records are being deactivated immediately. However, you do not need to worry if your birth certificate was not based on Aadhaar. If it relied on hospital records or municipal documents, your certificate will remain valid. There will be no change or issue with your authenticated document.
