PM Modi’s Condolence Message
Prime Minister Narendra Modi reacted to the death of former Bangladesh PM Khaleda Zia on Tuesday. He recalled her past contributions to India-Bangladesh relations. PM Modi mourned the loss of the Bangladesh National Party (BNP) leader. He said he was “deeply saddened” to hear about her passing.
Honoring Her Legacy
PM Modi posted a message on X (formerly Twitter). He wrote, “Deeply saddened to learn about the passing away of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia in Dhaka. Our sincerest condolences to her family and all the people of Bangladesh. May the Almighty grant her family the fortitude to bear this tragic loss.” He specifically acknowledged Khaleda Zia’s role in advancing India-Bangladesh diplomatic ties. He mentioned that her “important contributions” would always be remembered.
Recalling Their Meeting
PM Modi recalled their meeting from 2015. This was one year after he became India’s Prime Minister. PM Modi further wrote, “We hope that her vision and legacy will continue to guide our partnership. May her soul rest in peace.”
Zia’s Life and Political Rivalry
Khaleda Zia, 80, passed away on Tuesday morning around 6 am. Her party, BNP, released a statement confirming her death after days of illness. Zia was a key figure in Bangladesh’s political landscape. Her death follows her son Tarique Rahman’s return to the country. He ended his 17-year exile in London just days ago. Khaleda Zia became Bangladesh’s first woman prime minister in 1991. She served a second term from 2001 to 2006. Her political career was defined by a strong rivalry with Sheikh Hasina. PM Modi’s high praise for Khaleda Zia comes as Sheikh Hasina remains in India. Hasina, Zia’s greatest rival, has been residing in India. She came here after her ouster as PM in August 2024.
