While Chennai might see brief rain spells, southern Tamil Nadu and Puducherry face intense weather conditions.

Chennai weather forecast and alerts
Chennai expects a cloudy and rainy phase in the coming days. Light showers will likely occur intermittently throughout this week. The overall weather remains stable, but the India Meteorological Department (IMD) highlighted two alert days. Monday starts with partly cloudy skies and potential moderate rain or thunderstorms. Temperatures will likely rise to between 31 and 32 degrees Celsius. After this, Chennai will see cloudy skies with light rain until Friday. No major warnings exist for this period. Conditions should stay calm despite the clouds.
Weekend weather shift
However, the weather might turn unstable again towards the weekend. Detailed forecasts predict partly cloudy skies with rain, thunderstorms, or dust storms. The IMD issued a fresh warning for thunderstorms with lightning for Saturday.
Rising temperatures in the region
Chennai recorded minimum temperatures slightly above normal. This marks a rise of 1.6 degrees Celsius to 3 degrees Celsius. Other districts like Coimbatore, Dharmapuri, Salem, and Thirupattur also saw warmer nights. Meanwhile, Erode and Madurai airports recorded the highest daytime temperature at 32 degrees Celsius. Karur Paramathi reported the lowest minimum temperature in the plains at 20 degrees Celsius.
Puducherry schools close due to rain
Heavy rain disrupted daily life in Puducherry and Karaikal on Monday. Authorities decided to declare a holiday for all schools and colleges. The region has witnessed continuous rainfall since Saturday. This caused waterlogging in residential areas and on key roads. Home and Education Minister A Namassivayam announced that institutions “would stay closed due to the ongoing downpour”.
Heavy rainfall warning for districts
The southern and delta regions of Tamil Nadu will likely experience intense rainfall activity. Heavy rain may hit isolated spots in Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, and Tenkasi. The IMD bulletin also lists Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, and Thanjavur for alerts. This warning extends to the Karaikal area as well.
Weather systems influencing Tamil Nadu
Multiple developing systems over the Bay of Bengal shape these conditions. A low-pressure area near the South Andaman Sea has strengthened. It may become a depression on Monday and intensify into a cyclonic storm. This system pushes moisture towards Tamil Nadu rains, causing clouds and thunder. Another circulation near the Comorin region will likely form a fresh low-pressure area. A third system over the Southeast Arabian Sea also creates unstable conditions.
