SIR Controversy Sparks Suicides and Panic

The political atmosphere is heating up in West Bengal over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. On Saturday, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) leveled serious accusations. They claimed the BJP and the Election Commission (EC) conspired to delete millions of names from the voter list.

TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh stated that people in the state are gripped by fear. He said this is due to the BJP’s “inhuman politics” and the EC’s alleged collaboration. Ghosh tragically added that some are attempting suicide out of fear and hopelessness.

BJP Leaders Blamed for ‘Outsider’ Remarks

Ghosh asserted that general citizens across the state are experiencing fear and confusion. This is specifically true in North Bengal districts due to the SIR process. This situation has led to both suicides and severe mental stress among residents. He blamed BJP leaders for making “absurd and provocative statements” that terrorize people. “Some are ending their lives due to doubts about their citizenship. BJP is even mocking those suicides,” Ghosh claimed.

The TMC leader explicitly named three senior BJP leaders. He directly blamed Sukanta Majumdar, Samik Bhattacharya, and Suvendu Adhikari. He accused them of openly using the phrase, “We will pick out Bangladeshis and throw them out.” Such rhetoric is creating massive insecurity and panic among common citizens, he noted.

TMC Appeals for Humanity and Focus on Core Issues

Ghosh further mentioned that the BJP is trying to divert public attention. They want to shift focus away from key issues. These issues include unemployment, inflation, and public welfare. He urged the Central Government and the Election Commission to reconsider the matter.

Ghosh called for them to show sensitivity, stressing that this is no longer just a political issue. He warned that it is fast turning into a humanitarian tragedy. It is noteworthy that North Bengal districts recently reported incidents of suicide and widespread fear. These events are being linked to residents’ anxiety about losing their names from the voter list.

The SIR procedure involves the EC verifying names based on the 2002 electoral rolls.
