Indian Railways has specific rules regarding children’s train tickets and age limits for travel.

Millions of passengers travel daily across the country via train. Indian Railways operates thousands of trains for the convenience of these travelers. A valid ticket is essential for train travel; nobody can journey without one. However, many people remain confused regarding children’s train tickets.

Understanding the Railway Rules for Kids

Indian Railways has set certain regulations concerning children traveling on trains. This includes provisions for free travel for young children. Many passengers are unaware of these clear-cut rules. If you are traveling with your children, you must be familiar with these guidelines.

The Five-Year Age Limit

Children below five years of age are allowed to travel for free. This is a significant relief for families. However, they will not be allotted a separate berth. They must share the berth with an adult. This provision helps keep travel affordable.

Rules for Older Children

The regulations change for children aged five to twelve years. Previously, they were charged half the adult fare. However, a recent update has changed this. Now, a full ticket is required for a child in this age group. This applies if you want to secure a separate berth for them.

Opting Out of a Berth

If you choose not to take a separate berth for the child (aged 5-12), they can be considered under the free travel category. You must select this specific option during the ticket booking process. The Railways will verify that the no-berth option was correctly chosen.

The Adult Passenger Category

Any child above twelve years old is directly categorized as an adult passenger. They are required to purchase a full ticket. They will also receive a regular berth like any other adult. There is no special exemption under this rule. Many people make mistakes here, so carrying an age proof is necessary.

Essential Age Proof Documents

An Aadhaar Card or a School Identity Card is accepted as valid proof of the child’s age. It is mandatory to present this document when asked by the Ticket Examiner (TTE). Providing incorrect age information sometimes leads to a penalty. Therefore, keep your documents ready before your journey. When booking a long journey for your family, select the correct option for your children’s train tickets.
