Recent Tremors in Afghanistan
A magnitude 4.6 earthquake jolted Afghanistan on Wednesday morning. This follows a deadly quake on November 4. That powerful tremor killed at least 27 people. It also injured 956 others in the northern region.
Latest Quake Details
The National Center for Seismology (NCS) confirmed the latest seismic activity. The earthquake struck early today, November 26, 2025. According to the NCS post on X, the time was 4:39:43 IST. The quake occurred at a shallow depth of just 10 kilometers. Its coordinates were 36.31 N latitude and 68.93 E longitude. Afghanistan has experienced multiple recent tremors. Just a few days prior, on November 21, another earthquake was recorded. NCS noted that earlier quake had a magnitude of 4.3. It struck at 12:59:11 IST. That tremor was deeper, at 170 kilometers, the NCS shared on X.
Past Major Earthquakes
A devastating 6.3-magnitude quake hit northern Afghanistan earlier this month. The date was November 4. Sharafat Zaman Amar confirmed the fatalities. He is the spokesperson for the Taliban’s Ministry of Public Health. The tremor resulted in 27 deaths and 956 injuries. CNN reported the quake also damaged a beautiful mosque. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) provided details. The major quake hit near Mazar-i-Sharif. This is a very populated northern city. Families woke up from the 6.3-magnitude quake. It struck at a shallow depth of 28 kilometers (17.4 miles).
Why Afghanistan is Seismically Active
Afghanistan has a long history of significant quakes. The Red Cross explains that the Hindu Kush Mountains are highly active. Earthquakes happen there annually. Afghanistan sits on numerous fault lines. These lines are between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. One fault line runs directly through Herat. This location makes the region prone to seismic activity. The collision zone where these plates meet causes frequent tremors.
Vulnerability of Communities
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) highlights the risks. Afghanistan is very vulnerable to natural disasters. This includes landslides, floods, and earthquakes. Decades of conflict and underdevelopment have weakened communities. UNOCHA states that frequent quakes damage vulnerable areas. Locals have little capacity to handle simultaneous shocks.
