A car bomb ripped through a special military train near the Pakistani city of Quetta on Sunday morning. The attack killed at least 16 people most of them low-ranking soldiers. The train was carrying over 336 military personnel who were heading home for the Eid al-Adha holiday.
Train Was Halted Before the Attack Struck
A Pakistani security source confirmed the details of the attack. “The special train was moving from Quetta’s military zone toward the railway station it was hit by a car bomb,” the source said. The train had stopped to attach additional carriages. Those extra coaches were meant to carry the families of soldiers traveling home for the festival.
Soldiers Were Heading Home to Celebrate Eid
The troops onboard largely junior-ranking military staff were traveling to different parts of Pakistan. They planned to mark Eid al-Adha with their families. The attack struck at one of the most sensitive times of the Islamic calendar when millions across Pakistan prepare for the holiday.
Death Toll Confirmed at 16
Local police sources confirmed the death toll at least 16 people died in the blast. Rescue teams rushed to the site in Quetta, the capital of Balochistan province in southwestern Pakistan. Search operations for survivors were launched immediately after the explosion.
