Britain’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) confirmed a blast hit a tanker roughly 60 nautical miles east of Muscat, Oman. The explosion struck the port side near the waterline yet the crew and vessel remain safe.

Explosion Rocks Tanker Near Oman’s Coast
A tanker came under a sudden external explosion off the coast of Oman early Wednesday raising fresh alarm over maritime safety in the volatile waters of the Arabian Sea. Britain’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations, widely known as UKMTO, confirmed the incident after receiving an urgent distress report from the vessel’s captain.
The explosion struck approximately 60 nautical miles or about 111 kilometres east of Muscat, Oman’s capital city. The blast hit the port side of the tanker’s stern section, near the waterline. The location of the strike suggests a deliberate or targeted attack, though no group immediately claimed responsibility.
Fuel Spill Reported, But Crew Remains Safe
“UKMTO received a report of an incident 60 nautical miles (111 kilometres) east of Muscat, Oman. The master of the tanker reports an external explosion on the port side aft of the vessel near the waterline,” the official statement read.
A quantity of fuel escaped into the surrounding sea following the explosion adding an environmental dimension to what is already a serious maritime security incident. Despite the intensity of the blast, UKMTO confirmed that both the crew members and the vessel itself are safe and secure.
Rising Tension on Key Shipping Routes
This latest incident adds to a growing pattern of maritime disruptions near Oman and the broader Gulf region. Just days earlier on May 23 UKMTO flagged suspicious small boat activity in the Gulf of Aden, a critical chokepoint for global shipping traffic.
The waters near Oman sit along some of the world’s busiest oil and cargo shipping lanes. Any disruption in this zone can send ripples across global energy markets. Analysts and naval observers are watching the situation closely as incidents continue to pile up in the region.
Authorities Monitor Situation Closely
UKMTO which operates under Britain’s Royal Navy tracks maritime threats across the Indian Ocean and Gulf region. It provides real-time guidance and warnings to commercial vessels navigating high-risk zones.
The tanker explosion near Muscat is the latest in a series of incidents that have kept maritime authorities on high alert. No official confirmation has emerged yet about the nature of the attack or the identity of any party behind it. Investigations are ongoing.
