Tanuja Pandey: From Law Graduate to Voice of Gen-Z in Nepal

Tanuja Pandey, the 24-year-old activist from Kailali, played a key role in fueling Nepal’s Gen-Z protests.

Nepal recently witnessed an unprecedented uprising led by Generation-Z, which toppled the government of KP Sharma Oli. The protests gained such force that the Oli administration could not even withstand two full days of resistance. While many rushed to claim credit for this political storm, one young woman silently fueled the movement from behind the curtain. She is now seen negotiating with the army and the president on forming an interim government.

That young woman is 24-year-old Tanuja Pandey, a law graduate turned social activist, currently based in Kathmandu. Tanuja has been deeply engaged in environmental causes, but the recent protests drew her into the center of Nepal’s shifting political landscape. When the agitation began, she played a vocal role, rallying young voices with determination. After Oli’s fall, senior army officials are directly consulting her in ongoing discussions about the next political framework.

Early Life and Family Background of Tanuja Pandey

Born in Nepal’s Kailali district, Tanuja spent her early schooling years in Jhapa. She comes from a political family with deep roots in national affairs. Her grandfather, Ramesh Nath Pandey, was a veteran leader who served as Nepal’s Foreign Minister in 2006. This family connection placed her in close proximity to politics from childhood, but she later chose to create her own path.

According to her LinkedIn profile, Tanuja studied law at the National Law College in Nepal. After completing her LLB, she shifted focus toward social activism, using Kathmandu as her base. Reports suggest she was briefly associated with the youth wing of the Nepali Congress.

In 2018, Tanuja founded “Harin”, an organization initially run by just five people. The group’s mission has been to raise awareness about environmental conservation. In one of her interviews, she even described environmental work in Nepal as “one of the most dangerous fields.”

The Spark of the Gen-Z Movement

Tanuja’s name rose to prominence when she raised the first slogan against the government’s decision to ban social media platforms. She coined the powerful phrase “Enough is Enough”, which became the rallying cry of the movement. The slogan appeared on Generation-Z posters and spread like wildfire across Nepal.

Traveling with her team from Jhapa to Kathmandu, Tanuja organized demonstrations that quickly went viral online. She launched the hashtag #GenZNepal, which turned into a trending movement across social media networks. What began as a localized protest soon transformed into a nationwide digital and street campaign.

Her presence extended to high-level meetings as well. After the government’s collapse, protesters met with the army chief to discuss political transition, and Tanuja herself was part of those discussions.

Tanuja Pandey on the Interim Government

Speaking to BBC Nepali, Tanuja revealed her stance on leadership in the transitional phase. She stated, “We have opposed any politician being placed as the head of the interim government. We believe it is time for civil society to take command so that corruption can finally be eradicated.”

Her bold statement reflects a larger demand from young Nepalis who feel disconnected from the country’s old political class. Tanuja now stands as one of the emerging voices of a new generation that seeks transparency, accountability, and genuine reform in Nepal’s governance.
