Donald Trump stated that Iran hasn’t offered a unified negotiation plan yet. He extended the ceasefire until they do.

Trump Agrees to Ceasefire Extension
US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that he is extending the ceasefire with Iran. This decision follows a request from Pakistan, the primary mediator in the current talks. Trump noted that Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir made the appeal. They asked him to pause attacks until Tehran’s leaders present a “unified proposal.”
Naval Blockade to Persist
While the US President extended the truce, the naval blockade of Iranian ports will remain active. This blockade specifically targets areas near the strategic Strait of Hormuz. “I have therefore directed our Military to continue the Blockade and, in all other respects, remain ready and able, and will therefore extend the Ceasefire until such time as their proposal is submitted, and discussions are concluded, one way or the other,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
War Escalation Fears May Ease
This major announcement from the Republican leader might calm fears of a larger war. Even while extending the truce, Trump criticized the Iranian government. He claimed the leadership in Tehran had become “seriously fractured.” Meanwhile, reports suggest Vice President JD Vance’s planned trip to Pakistan is currently on hold.
Trump’s Previous ‘Bombing’ Threats
Hours before this extension, Trump had threatened to resume “bombing” if the deadline passed without a deal. “I expect to be bombing because I think that’s a better attitude to go in with,” Trump told CNBC’s “Squawk Box.” He had initially suggested he would not extend the ceasefire before reversing his stance.
Iran Suspects a Trap
An advisor to Iran’s parliamentary speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, called the extension a “ploy” for a surprise attack. According to Reuters, the advisor stated that the “losing side” cannot dictate terms. Iran has not yet officially confirmed its participation in the next round of talks.
Confusion Over Islamabad Talks
Despite the announcement, uncertainty surrounds the second round of negotiations in Islamabad. Iran’s state media previously reported a rejection of the talks due to “excessive” US demands. A major sticking point is the seizure of the Iranian ship Touska by US Marines. Trump claims the crew ignored warnings, while Iran labels the incident “armed piracy.”
