Background: A Conflict That Has Been Simmering for Months
The United States and Israel began striking targets inside Iran on February 28. Those strikes killed more than 3,000 people in total. On April 8, Washington and Tehran jointly announced a two-week ceasefire. Peace talks held in Islamabad followed shortly after but ended without any agreement or resolution.
Despite the failed negotiations, neither side formally announced a resumption of active combat. However, the US moved forward with a naval blockade of Iranian ports adding fresh economic and military pressure on Tehran.
