From China to the US and France: Why Are Five Global Superpowers Copying Iran’s Lethal Weapon?

Iran’s Shahed drones are cheap, precise, and long-range weapons that are reshaping modern warfare. Russia deployed them in Ukraine, and now America along with other major powers are replicating this technology. Despite US sanctions, Iran advanced rapidly in drone innovation.

Iran’s Shahed drones, cheap yet powerful, are being replicated by major global powers.

In June, Iran launched over 100 Shahed drones during an Israeli strike and delivered a strong counterattack. Russia also used these Iran-made drones in the Ukraine war. Their most significant qualities are low cost, accuracy, and long-range flight. Countries such as the United States, China, France, and the United Kingdom are now producing replicas of Iran’s Shahed drones. Recently, the US Department of Defense unveiled several new drones, including models inspired by Shahed designs.

In past wars, militaries relied on expensive missiles for precision strikes. The Ukraine conflict proved that drones can perform similar tasks with accuracy at a much lower cost. A Shahed drone costs around 30,000 to 40,000 dollars (₹27 to 35 lakh), far cheaper than conventional missiles. These drones can travel nearly 1,000 miles, making them a cost-efficient weapon.

Cheap but Deadly

Shahed drones come equipped with advanced systems. They conduct surveillance, reconnaissance, and disrupt enemy air defense networks when deployed in large numbers. Their strength lies in delivering effective results despite being low-cost. This is why nations like the US are racing to develop their own replicas, aiming to build powerful yet affordable weapons.

Former US President Donald Trump once admitted that “Iran’s drones are very cheap and effective, while American drones are extremely expensive.” He highlighted that Iranian drones cost around 35,000 to 40,000 dollars, whereas American drones can reach a staggering 41 million dollars. With a speed range of 150 to 300 km per hour, Shahed drones are ideal for long missions. They run on small piston or rotary-type engines powered by aviation fuel or diesel. The built-in fuel tanks extend their operational range, making them highly reliable.

Iran’s Breakthrough in Drone Technology

Iran has rapidly advanced in drone development, giving it the ability to carry out long-distance precision attacks. This progress significantly boosted its military strength across West Asia. Despite decades of American sanctions and threats, Iran invested heavily in domestic weapons production to ensure self-reliance for its military.

Iranian officials state that their armed forces exist to protect the country, but they remain committed to enhancing military capabilities. Shahed drones have changed the dynamics of modern warfare, offering a low-cost weapon that inflicts heavy damage. Their decisive impact on today’s battlefields is pushing superpowers to replicate Iran’s model of affordable military power.
