RBI is implementing the check clearance system in two phases. The first phase started on October 4, allowing checks to clear within a single day.

A big announcement brings great news for bank customers. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has issued new guidelines. According to this, a check submitted over the counter will clear in just 3 hours from January 3, 2026.
RBI’s Phased Approach
The Reserve Bank is rolling out this check clearance system in two distinct stages. The initial phase began on October 4. In this phase, checks are clearing within one day. This means a check deposited in the morning clears by the evening. The RBI’s objective is to cut down the clearing time. This step improves convenience for customers significantly.
Stricter Rules Take Effect Soon
The rules will become much stricter starting January 3, 2026. After a check is deposited, it is sent to the Drawee Bank. The Drawee Bank is where the money will be deducted from an account. The bank must respond within a set deadline.
For instance, if a customer deposits a check between 11 AM and 12 PM, the bank must confirm the result by 3 PM. Confirmation includes if the check is passed or failed. A check may be stopped if there is a wrong date or an incorrect signature.
Account number discrepancies can also lead to rejection. If the bank fails to respond within the deadline, the check will be automatically passed. The settlement process will then begin.
The Difference Between the Two Phases
Under the current first phase (since October 4), checks are sent continuously to the clearing house. This happens from 10 AM to 4 PM.
Banks must confirm if a check is passed or returned by 7 PM.
The second phase will bring much stricter regulations. The bank must confirm the check within three hours of its deposit.
For example, if a customer deposits a check between 11 AM and 12 PM, the bank must respond by 3 PM maximum. If the bank does not provide information on time, the rule considers the check automatically passed. Its settlement is then initiated.
How a Check Clears
A check is typically deposited at the bank between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM. The bank scans it and forwards it digitally to the clearing house.
The Drawee Bank or paying bank must then pass or fail the check received from the clearing house. If the bank fails to reply within the timeframe, the check is considered valid. The settlement process begins automatically. The funds are credited to the account one hour after the settlement.
