Trump Claims 200% Tariffs Stopped India-Pakistan Conflict

Trump said the Gaza ceasefire marks the eighth global conflict he claims to have resolved and hinted at focusing next on Pakistan-Afghanistan tensions.

Tariffs as Peace Tools

US President Donald Trump highlighted his tariff threats as the key factor preventing war between India and Pakistan earlier this year. Speaking to reporters while traveling to the Middle East ahead of an Israel-Hamas hostage swap, Trump stated he could “solve” eight international conflicts, which he claimed to have ended.

Focus on Border Tensions

Trump also addressed ongoing tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan, hinting that he might step in to resolve them as he is skilled at “ending wars.”

Tariffs Settled the India-Pak Dispute

“I settled some wars just through tariffs. For instance, India and Pakistan. I said, If you go to war and have nuclear weapons, I’ll impose huge tariffs, 100%, 150%, 200%,” Trump told reporters en route to Egypt for a peace summit expecting an Israel-Hamas truce.

“I announced the tariffs, and the issue was resolved in 24 hours. Without tariffs, that war would never have ended,” he added.

India Rejects US Claim

India has consistently rejected the US claim of intervening in Operation Sindoor or influencing the ceasefire with Pakistan. Since May 2025, Trump has repeatedly credited his trade and tariff policies for halting military escalation, while New Delhi maintains that the pause resulted from direct military talks.

Shifting Focus to Afghanistan-Pakistan Tensions

Trump said the Gaza ceasefire represents his eighth resolved conflict and suggested he will now address Pakistan-Afghanistan tensions.
“This will be my eighth war solved. I hear there’s a war between Pakistan and Afghanistan. I said, It’ll wait till I return. I’m handling another one because I’m good at ending wars,” he added aboard Air Force One.

Nobel Prize and Conflict Resolution

Trump promoted his record of ending conflicts as excellent, hoping for consideration in next year’s Nobel Peace Prize nominations.
“Some wars lasted 31, 32, 37 years with millions of deaths. I ended them mostly within a day. It’s a huge achievement… I saved millions of lives,” he said.

On being snubbed for the 2024 Nobel Prize, he said, “It was for 2024. But many achievements happened in 2025. I didn’t do it for the Nobel. I did it to save lives.”
