AAP workers stormed the Jalandhar home of cricketer-turned-MP Harbhajan Singh on Saturday. They also marched to the LPU campus of MP Ashok Mittal. Both leaders had dumped the Aam Aadmi Party to join the BJP a day earlier, triggering a wave of rage across Punjab.

Jalandhar Erupts in Anger After Seven AAP MPs Jump Ship to BJP
Tensions flared across Jalandhar on Saturday morning. Furious Aam Aadmi Party workers took to the streets. They gathered outside the home of Rajya Sabha MP and former cricket star Harbhajan Singh. Another group descended on the Lovely Professional University campus. LPU is run by Rajya Sabha MP Ashok Mittal. Both Harbhajan Singh and Ashok Mittal had resigned from AAP on Friday. They were among seven AAP Rajya Sabha MPs who crossed over to the BJP. This defection triggered an immediate and fierce reaction from ground-level party workers and local leaders across Punjab.
‘Gaddar’ Scrawled in Bold Letters Outside Harbhajan Singh’s Home
The AAP protest outside Harbhajan Singh’s Chhoti Baradari locality residence in Jalandhar turned particularly tense. Workers scrawled the word “gaddar” meaning traitor on the outer walls of the property. Jalandhar Mayor Vaneet Dhir personally led the demonstrators at the site. Jalandhar Central halqa incharge Nitin Kohli also stood alongside the marching workers. Protesters arrived carrying placards branding both Harbhajan Singh and Ashok Mittal as traitors to the party and to Punjab. Slogan chanting grew louder by the minute as the gathering swelled outside the residence.
“Bhajji BJP Ch Bhaj Gya” Chant Rings Out Across the Locality
The chant that echoed loudest outside Bhajji’s home was “Bhajji BJP ch bhaj gya.” This roughly translates to “Bhajji has fled to the BJP.” Workers grew increasingly vocal in their anger. “Those who have stabbed the party in the back must have some shame,” they shouted repeatedly. Protesters also branded the departed leaders as “saleable” politicians. The crowd insisted that Jalandhar had always taken pride in Harbhajan Singh because of his cricketing glory. “The AAP gave him his due respect but he ditched the party,” said the demonstrators gathered outside his gate.
Heavy Police Deployed as Protests Hit Both Harbhajan’s Home and LPU Campus
Law enforcement moved swiftly to manage the situation. Heavy police deployment surrounded both protest sites throughout the demonstrations. Officers remained stationed outside Harbhajan Singh’s residence in Chhoti Baradari. A large police presence also held ground at the Lovely Professional University campus in Phagwara. Despite the security arrangements, protesters continued raising their voices without stopping. The demonstrations reflected a growing political crisis inside AAP. Seven of its Rajya Sabha MPs, including Raghav Chadha and Harbhajan Singh, had switched sides within a span of days. This exodus deepened the turmoil inside the party’s Punjab unit considerably.
