Maharashtra Local Polls: Election Expenditure Limits Hiked for Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayats!

The election schedule is out for 246 Municipal Councils and 42 Nagar Panchayats across the state. Voting will take place on December 2, with results announced on December 3.

Local Body Elections Schedule Announced

The State Election Commission has sounded the poll bugle. They have ordered elections in 246 Municipal Councils and 42 Nagar Panchayats. Voting will be held on December 2. The results are set for December 3. The schedule does not include elections for Municipal Corporations yet. Significantly, the spending limit for Municipal Council and Nagar Panchayat candidates has been increased.

Supreme Court Mandate and Election Dates

The Supreme Court directed elections for local bodies within four months. The court also specified polls should be held before January 2026. Following this directive, the State Election Commission announced the schedule. Elections will be held in 246 Municipal Councils and 42 Nagar Panchayats.

Voting on December 2, Results on December 3

Nomination filing begins on November 17. The date for re-nomination is November 18. Candidates can withdraw their applications until November 21. The final list of candidates will be published on November 25. Voting takes place on December 2. The final results will be announced on December 3.

Election Preparedness and Voter Count

The State Election Commissioner announced the poll program today. It covers 246 Municipal Councils and 42 Nagar Panchayats. As mentioned, no Municipal Corporation elections are announced. The state has over 1.07 crore total voters. A setup of 13,355 polling centers has been arranged. Voting will only use electronic machines. Arrangements for 13,725 control units are complete.

New Election Expenditure Limits

The maximum spending limit for candidates has been raised this year.

  • ‘A’ Class Municipal Council: The limit for the President’s post is ₹ 15 Lakh. For a member’s seat, it is ₹10 Lakh.
  • ‘B’ Class Municipal Council: The President’s post limit is ₹ 11.25 Lakh. A member’s seat has a ₹ 3.50 Lakh limit.
  • ‘C’ Class Municipal Council: The limit for the President’s post is ₹ 7.50 Lakh. For a member’s seat, it is ₹ 2.50 Lakh.
  • Nagar Panchayat: The spending limit is ₹6 Lakh for the President’s post. For a member’s seat, the limit is ₹ 2.25 Lakh.

The Election Commission has launched a website for voters. This site includes a ‘Search Facility’. Voters can find their name and polling center easily. A mobile app for voters has also been developed. The app will provide voter lists, polling centers, and candidate details.
