Mahmoud Abbas currently heads the Palestinian Authority. Discussions named him as the potential new Palestinian President following the Gaza agreement. However, US President Donald Trump completely dismissed his candidacy. Trump referred to Abbas as an elderly person.

The US President, Donald Trump, made a major announcement regarding Palestine’s next president amid the Gaza deal. Trump stated clearly that Mahmoud Abbas cannot become the leader of an independent Palestine. He acknowledged Abbas is knowledgeable. However, he does not fit the type of leader Palestine needs now.
Mahmoud Abbas presently serves as the head of the Palestinian Authority. Until now, he was widely expected to take command once a new Palestinian state formed.
Trump Speaks in Favor of Barghouti
Speaking with Time Magazine, Donald Trump remarked, “I have met Mahmoud Abbas.” He added, “He definitely knows about Palestine.” But he confirmed, “He cannot become the leader of Palestine.” Trump also described Abbas as an elderly man. Responding to one question, Trump said he will discuss Marwan al-Barghouti’s release with Benjamin Netanyahu. Al-Barghouti is imprisoned in an Israeli jail. Trump decided to get him released immediately.
Hamas is actively trying to make Barghouti the next president. Israel arrested Barghouti in 2002. He has been in prison ever since that time. Many view Marwan Barghouti as the face of Palestinian resistance.
Who is Mahmoud Abbas?
Mahmoud Abbas leads the Palestinian Authority. Abbas took on this responsibility in 2005. Yasser Arafat was the first head of the Palestinian Authority. Born in Galilee, Palestine, in 1935, Abbas completed his education from Syria.
He served as its Prime Minister before becoming the head of the Palestinian Authority. Mahmoud Abbas joined the Palestinian movement alongside Yasser Arafat. Currently, Abbas represents Palestine at the United Nations meetings. However, he faces opposition within Palestine. Palestinians claim he acts on instructions from the US and European countries. Hamas, the militant organization in Palestine, also strongly dislikes Abbas.
Efforts to Form a New Government
After the Gaza agreement, efforts are underway to establish a new government in Palestine. The agreement specifies no role for Hamas in this government. Conversely, Hamas asserts they will not accept any external government in Gaza. This situation is creating confusion regarding Gaza’s future.
