Donald Trump recently stated that Turkish President Erdogan might stop the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. This follows a conversation where Erdogan discussed accelerating peace efforts with Russian President Putin. Furthermore, Trump will meet with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy on Friday at the White House. They will focus on peace initiatives and defense cooperation. Erdogan’s name is now central to these discussions.

Trump Backs Erdogan’s Diplomatic Role
President Donald Trump reiterated his belief on Monday. He said Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan could be key to ending the Russia-Ukraine war. Trump emphasized Erdogan’s diplomatic skills. He stressed that these abilities could greatly help in concluding the conflict.
When asked about Erdogan’s potential role, Trump was very clear. He spoke to the media aboard Air Force One. This happened while returning to the White House from Egypt on Monday. “Erdogan can do it,” Trump stated. He then added, “Russia respects him (Erdogan).”
Erdogan Discusses Peace with Putin
The Turkish President, Erdogan, spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin last week. Their discussion was a phone call. During the conversation, Erdogan insisted on moving diplomatic initiatives forward. He believes this is essential for achieving a fair and lasting peace in the conflict.
Erdogan’s office released a statement after the talk. The statement highlighted Turkey’s firm commitment. Turkey is dedicated to establishing peace in the region.
Trump’s statement comes as global concerns over the war grow. Turkey is a NATO member. Yet, it maintains strong ties with Russia. Turkey has previously attempted to mediate the ongoing conflict. Erdogan has consistently advocated for talks between both warring sides.
Zelenskyy’s Upcoming Meeting with Trump
Trump later confirmed an important meeting. He will meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday. The meeting will take place at the White House. Zelenskyy had announced the US trip earlier. He revealed that a Ukrainian delegation was heading to the US for several meetings. He would then meet the US President on Friday.
Zelenskyy shared his thoughts on X (formerly Twitter). He said, “I will also have the opportunity to come to Washington and meet with President Trump on Friday.” He expressed his confidence. “I am confident we will discuss a series of steps that I intend to propose.” He also showed gratitude. “I am grateful to President Trump for our dialogue and his support.”
Zelenskyy also stressed the trip’s main focus. It is centered on air defense and long-range capabilities. The ultimate goal is pressuring Russia towards peace.
