National Guard Soldier Killed Near White House in Terror Attack; One Critical. What Did Trump Say Now?

National Guard Member Dies in White House Area Shooting

A National Guard soldier was fatally shot in Washington, near the White House. US President Donald Trump paid tribute to the deceased soldier, Sara Backstrom. The condition of the other injured soldier is reported to be critical. The attack happened on Wednesday (November 26, 2025). Two National Guard members were shot at close range just a few blocks from the White House.

Trump Labels Incident a Terrorist Attack

President Trump has described this event as a terrorist attack. He stated the crime was committed with an ideology of “evil, hate, and terror.” Trump mentioned receiving the news of Sara Backstrom’s death moments before. He addressed the troops via a video call after hearing the tragic information.

Assailant Identified as Afghan National; Investigation Ordered

US media reports identify the suspect as Rahmanullah Lakhanwal. This individual arrived in the United States from Afghanistan in 2021. Trump declared that this person entered the country under a refugee program. He blamed the previous Biden administration for this situation. Trump announced a re-vetting of all Afghan arrivals. He will consider removing those who “do not love America.”

Following this incident, the US has halted immigration from Afghanistan. The USCIS announced a change in its policy. It stated, “All immigration requests related to Afghan nationals are indefinitely paused.” This halt is effective immediately pending further security protocol review. “The safety of our homeland and the American people is our sole focus and mission,” the USCIS affirmed.

Security Boosted, 500 More Troops Deployed

The Trump administration chose to step up security in Washington after the attack. President Trump gave the order to deploy 500 extra troops. Currently, about 2,400 National Guard members are deployed in Washington. This figure includes both DC National Guard and soldiers from other states. The shooting occurred less than 500 meters from the White House. Security has been tightened in the area following the incident. An investigation into the shooting remains ongoing.
