How Long Do UN Speeches Last? Trump Spoke for 1 Hour, This Leader Spoke 4.5 Hours 65 Years Ago

Trump spoke at the UNGA for nearly an hour, sharing his views on illegal immigration, America’s economy, the Russia-Ukraine war, Israel-Hamas conflict, and carbon footprint. Let’s explore how long UN speeches can actually last.

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) witnessed a lengthy UN speech by U.S. President Donald Trump, marking his first address to the UNGA in his second term. His remarks quickly grabbed media attention due to their duration, lasting almost an hour.

According to UN guidelines, leaders are typically allotted a 15-minute speaking slot. By speaking for nearly sixty minutes, Trump broke this longstanding tradition. Although the rule sets a 15-minute limit for each leader, it is not uncommon for heads of major nations to exceed it.

Global Records for Long Speeches
Despite its length, Trump’s speech did not set a new record. The longest speech in UN history was delivered in 1960 by Cuba’s leader Fidel Castro, which lasted approximately 4.5 hours. In 2009, Libya’s former president Muammar Gaddafi also spoke for over ninety minutes.

Topics Covered by Trump
During his hour-long address, Trump covered multiple contentious topics. He criticized Europe, India, and China over the Russia-Ukraine war, accusing European nations of still buying oil and gas from Russia. India and China were described as major funders of the conflict.

Trump warned that if Russia refused to agree to a peace settlement, the U.S. would impose strong tariffs. He also declared, “Climate change is the greatest scam in the world,” labeling the carbon footprint concept as false and misleading.

Serious Allegations Against the UN
Trump further accused the United Nations of funding attacks on Western nations and their borders. He claimed that the UN was providing cash cards to migrants arriving at the U.S. southern border. He emphasized, “The UN’s role is to stop wars, not create or fund them.”
