The United States has restricted the movement of the Iranian delegation that arrived in New York for today’s United Nations General Assembly session. The US government has limited them strictly between their hotel and the UN headquarters, barring any movement beyond this route.

Every September, leaders from across the globe gather in New York to address the United Nations General Assembly. This year marks the 80th session of the assembly, and all eyes are on the speech of US President Donald Trump. However, a strict step taken by the US has already become the center of attention.
Iranian officials who reached New York to participate in the meeting have faced tough restrictions. The American government has barred their free movement and confined them to travel only between their hotel and the United Nations headquarters. This unusual measure has sparked global discussion.
New Rules from the US
US State Department Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott announced that Iranian officials cannot roam around the city or purchase luxury items. He explained that these restrictions were imposed to ensure Iranian rulers do not enjoy luxury abroad while ordinary citizens struggle with poverty, water and power shortages, and poor infrastructure at home.
A Firm Message from Washington
Tommy Pigott clearly stated, “The United States prioritizes the safety of our citizens. We will not allow the Iranian regime to misuse the United Nations platform to spread terror or indulge in luxury.” He further added that this decision shows solidarity with the Iranian people and holds their leaders accountable for their actions.
Iran’s Troubles at Home
Iran has already been dealing with a severe economic crisis. Poverty and inflation continue to rise due to US sanctions, corruption, and mismanagement. The Iranian leadership fears another wave of public protests, similar to those in 2017, as people grow restless over declining living standards. Although Iranian leaders distrust Washington, they still view diplomacy as the most viable way to resolve conflicts with Western nations over their nuclear program.
